Cytotec (Misoprostol) is a potent drug that prevents ulcers caused by NSAIDs consumption e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac. It also reduces severe ulcer complications like bleeding, especially when a person is undergoing treatment involving NSAIDs consumption. Such persons might be prone to ulcers, are elderly, or suffer a concomitant illness.
Misoprostol also prevents intestinal bleeding after surgery. It reduces the level of acid in the stomach during the period of recovery. A combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol offers a safe means of terminating a pregnancy.
Patients must read the medicine leaflet carefully before commencing therapy. If the instructions weren't clear enough, consult a doctor or a pharmacist. A doctor will prescribe a suitable dose based on your medical condition. Therefore, avoid reducing or increasing the dosage.
This medicine shouldn’t be shared with another person even if the same symptoms show up in both patients.
Adults should consume 200 mcg per day divided into 4 doses to reduce the incidence of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs. Last doses must be ingested at night and with dinner to prevent or reduce the occurrence of diarrhea. However, if your system can’t tolerate the dosage, the physician should reduce it to 100 mcg per day.
For first trimester induced abortion, a doctor will administer Mifepristone followed by 800 mcg Misoprostol vaginally. It can also be placed under the tongue every 3 hours to dissolve into the blood.
For inducing labor and cervical ripening, an OB-GYN can administer 25 mcg through the vagina every three to six hours. They can also administer 50 mcg every six hours.
To manage postpartum bleeding when there’s no oxytocin, an OB-GYN can administer 800 mcg sublingually or 600 mcg orally after delivery.
